The XYZ Public Library
Long Range Plan

MISSION: The mission of the XYZ Public Library is to improve the community’s quality of life by providing access to information for lifelong learning, by promoting the enjoyment of life long learning and providing library services to our community.

ADMINISTRATIVE & FISCAL GOAL

GOAL: To write & maintain a long-range plan appropriate with the library's mission statement and the needs of the community.

  • Objective: Totally revise long range plan to for the community needs in light of the facilities.
  • Objective: The library will each December, review the long-range plan to update and reevaluate needs and goals.
  • Objective: Every five (5) years, the library will conduct a community needs study to determine changing needs.

PERSONNEL GOAL
GOAL: To provide knowledgeable, well-trained staff to meet the needs of library patrons.

  • Objective: The library will provide funds equal to 0.5% of the budget for continuing education, plus mileage for the library staff & trustees each year.


COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT GOAL
GOAL: To plan, select and build the collection in all formats to be used by the library's public.

  • Objective: The library will budget 0.5% additionally each year to purchase additional non-book materials to expand its collection.
  • Objective: To do continuous evaluation of the collection in relation to the needs of the community. Each year the library will plan for a 3.5% turn over in materials.
  • Objective: The library staff will conduct a thorough weeding of 1/3 of the collection annually.
  • Objective: To provide a fresh collection for the public.

PROGRAMS & SERVICES GOALS
GOAL: To provide service and programs consistent with the library's chosen roles in the community: (1) to serve as a popular materials center, (2) to serve as a community information center, and (3) to serve as a preschoolers' door to learning.

  • Objective: The library will maintain current information regarding community organizations and services, updating periodically
  • Objective: The library will provide a preschool story hour for ages 3-5 for one hour each week from October through April.

GOAL: To provide programming for the community consistent with their interests and needs.

  • Objective: The library will provide programming for the community at least twice each year, in varying formats and subject areas.

PUBLIC RELATIONS GOALS
GOAL: To use a variety of approaches to communicate a positive image of the library to our community.

  • Objective: The Library will start & support a "Friends of the Library" group to promote the Public Library

GOAL: To promote the availability of Library materials, services & programs with various audiences and ages.

  • Objective: The Library staff will write articles for local newspapers on a bi-monthly basis-more frequently when called for--promoting library materials, services & programs.
  • Objective: The Library staff will develop an outreach program to make materials and information available to a wide segment of the population on a continuous basis.

FACILITIES GOAL
GOAL: To provide the public with a facility which will meet the needs of the community through the provision of life-long learning opportunities?

  • Objective: Provide the Internet as a source of information.
  • Objective: To provide facilities that will meet programming goals & objectives in the library building.
