ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Would you like to automate your library catalog but the cost seems
too high?
East Central Library Services can help you cut some of the expense.
ECLS can convert your shelf list to MARC records at a reasonable
rate! *
The advantages of having an outside service convert your records
are enormous; staff time is kept to working with your library patrons,
not spent endlessly cataloging on a computer that may or may not
be available during library hours.* We work directly with you to
prepare your shelf list. We can convert your complete shelf list,
or can work-as-you-get-them-done, whichever is more convenient.
ECLS charges 20 cents per converted record plus 35 cents for each
diskette. Compare this to commercial services and you can see the
savings! Contact Linda Lumsden, Administrative Assistant, East Central
Library Services, llumsde@ecls.lib.ia.us
Ken's COMMENT -- You can't beat that price with a stick, let alone
a bid - go ahead get one (or a dozen) and see. * 1. EC rate is about
1/4 to 1/3 of most of the commercial retro venders. 2. EC has expertise
in MARC records et. al. that VERY few MLS librarians have let alone
non-MLS librarians. In other words this is a very good deal.

Good Morning! This time in EYE-OPENER:
1) National Children's Book Week
2) 2004--2005 Children's Choice and Teen Awards
3) Follett Automation Software Discount
4) Meetings / Events This Week - cliped local data
1) National Children's Book Week: By now, I'm sure most of you
have plans in place to celebrate National Children's Book Week,
November 17-23, 2003. This year's theme, FREE TO READ, marks the
84th annual observance sponsored by the Children's Book Council.
Since 1919, libraries, booksellers,
schools, and families have celebrated Children's Book Week during
the week before Thanksgiving. The Children's Book Council has a
catalog--and website--where you can purchase posters, banners, bookmarks,
and streamers, highlighting this year's theme--and others. Many
of the promotional materials are undated, so they can have a display
life in the library long after Children's Book Week is over. For
ideas about promoting Children's Book Week, along with a peek at
the many promotional materials, go to: http://www.cbcbooks.org
2) 2004--2005 Children's Choice and Teen Awards: The 2004-2005
books that make up the Children's Choice Awards, the Iowa Teen Awards,
and the Iowa High School Awards have been selected. Complete lists
of award-winning titles--and a synopsis for each--are posted on
the Iowa Educational Media Association's website (IEMA) at http://www.iema-ia.org/icca.html
Perfection Learning Corporation won the bid to provide these books
to Iowa libraries. In addition, Perfection Learning was the only
vendor to provide posters for each award group at no extra cost.
Here's a handful of titles from among the 17 books on the 2004-2005
Children's Choice Award list:
- Doing Time Online, by Jan Siebold. Whitman, 2002.
- The Ghost and Mrs. Hobbs, by Cynthia DeFelice. Farrary, Straus,
Giroux, 2001.
- My Chimp Friday: The Nana Banana Chronicles, by Hester Mundis.
Simon & Schuster, 2002.
- No More Nasty, by Amy MacDonald. Farrar, Straus, Giroux, 2001.
- Wishes, Kisses and Pigs, by Betsy Hearne. M.D. McElderry Books,
2001.
3) Follett Automation Software Discount: Libraries on the brink
of choosing an automation company might like to know this: the Follett
Software Company has extended its promotional offer of its integrated
library automation system. Follett's CIRC PLUS and CATALOG PLUS
multi-user license is selling for $999.00 until March 31, 2004.
This promotional offer discounts what is typically $3,500.00 worth
of automation software for $999.00. For more information, contact
Tom Merchant, Automation Consultant for the Follett Software Company,
at 800-323-3397 extension 7949. Or email Tom at tmerchant@fsc.follett.com
Libraries that are already Follett customers may sign up to receive
the
company's monthly newsletter via email. Log onto http://www.fsc.follett.com and select "Subscribe
to receive new product info, newsletters, and more..."

CONSORTIA:
Alpine Customers: The long missing check has been found, I will
do the breakdown on Monday and will have the amount you will get
by Tuesday (Good Lord willing and the creck don't rise.).
THEN I will draw up the needed forms for Board approval of the payments
and send the check off to you. Our Board meets on 12/8/2003
You should have check in hand by the end of that week.
Some of you have asked why I keep pushing e-rate instructions
(such as the material on the Form 470 below - end of blog) on you
when you don't care.
The answer is two fold
- I want you to have an opportunity to learn about the program
if you wish
- CYA- If you or the Consortia is audited I want to be able to
show that I met the Consortia obligation to keep you informed
of progress of the application.
CONSORTIA PACKET:
NOTE: There was an incorrect/unclear date in the original posting
the date when you have to have the material back to me is 12/1/2003.

is why we are there, and this is a very unlogical/confusing federal
government program. Not understanding is the norm not unusual.

last possible day for the July 2004 - June 2005 funding year.

Supporting Documents, & other "stuff"

EYE-OPENER:
I strongly suggest that you read the EYE OPENER Bonnie & Chris
have a differing philosophy, and are much more disciplined than
I am as to what they include, by the time I edit out their local
