Friday Notes: notes for next week
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
The
tables for the 2005 Public Library
Statistics are on the web at: http://www.silo.lib.ia.us,

The November/December issue of the State
Library's online newsletter is available at: www.silo.lib.ia.us.
Something to think about:
Back in the 1970s, there was some controversy when the Forsyth County
Library in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, decided to establish a
branch in the Reynolda Shopping Center. There was a bookstore
there that protested because of anticipated losses in sales.
Well, the library was established in the shopping center anyway,
and the bookstore's revenue actually increased. The reason
had to do with the nature of the public library.
With its limited budget as a publicly-funded entity, the public
library as an institution never has enough money to satisfy the
desires of the general populace. So, the library becomes a
draw for customers who will then go to bookstores and other similar
venues when their needs at the library are not met. That's
the same reason that a group of fast-food businesses will situate
their establishments in the same area: like firms feed off
of one another for the mutual benefit of all.
Online archive of materials and
resources
The California State Library's Rural Initiative has expanded its
online archive of materials and resources to help California's rural
public libraries serve their users more efficiently. The
clearinghouse can be found at: http://resourceroundup.net
A new section has been added on Library Administration, including
the topic areas of Trustees, Building Programs, Local Issues, and
Funding & Budgeting. In addition, the Model Projects
& Best Practices section has been expanded with materials
on Accessibility, Reference and Interlibrary Loan.
By providing examples of commonly needed documents, materials and
programs in all aspects of library operations, the Clearinghouse
benefits rural libraries by eliminating the need to "reinvent the
wheel" for every new policy, practice, procedure or project needed
locally.
Although intended primarily to benefit rural public libraries in
California, the Clearinghouse is open to all libraries, anywhere
in the country. There is no charge to access or use
Clearinghouse resources.
Visit the Clearinghouse at:
http://resourceroundup.net
The Clearinghouse also includes sections on Training and on Policies,
Procedures & Manuals; new sections and section topics will continue
to be added based on user feedback.
The Rural Initiative and the Rural Library Resources Clearinghouse
are supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum of Library Services
under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered
in California by the State Librarian. Collection of materials and
resources for some sections of the Clearinghouse is provided pro bono
by California public librarians.

ABOUT THE LSA:
A great resource for us.
In Peosta, Iowa there is a National Education Center
for Agricultural Safety that has a great library and
presenters available. They actually have a "lab" where they
simulate grain elevator mishaps, tractor rollovers, etc. The
number is 563 557 0354. http://www.nsc.org/necas/contact.htm
It is a partnership of many entities including NorthEast Iowa Community
College and the Department of Agriculture. Hope this info is
useful to many of you. Becky Heil, Library
Director
Dubuque County Library
Outreach you can do and which will help patrons.
The Dubuque County
Library began receiving requests for information about the new Medicare
prescription plan in early November. Since none of
us knew anything about it and weren't even sure where to go to get
the information, we thought a program for our patrons would be a
good idea. I called the local Agency on Aging (who was sponsoring
programs in our area) and got the contact information about qualified
presenters. SHIIP (State Health Insurance Information Program)
has been providing presenters and counselors for insurance information
for about 10 years. There are about 200 volunteers in the
state and they have all been trained on the new Medicare prescription
plan. There is a SHIPP website where you can get volunteer’s
names and other information. I also contacted our local Social
Security Administration Office and they are also trained and willing
to attend programs and answer questions. We had four programs
in four different cities with a total attendance of about 50 people.
We have already been asked to repeat them next spring. We
felt we did not want to provide information about specific plans
(there are 41 in the State of Iowa)
but wanted people to go away feeling a little more comfortable with
making a decision. This is an easy program to present as all
you have to do is show up and provide electricity for their power
point presentation! http://www.shiip.state.ia.us/
