New Friday Notes: notes for next week
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Misdirected
Inter-library Loan Requests
Over the last couple of weeks, an unusual
amount of inter-library loan requests that have been filled through
OCLC have been sent to the wrong libraries. Apparently, lending
libraries using an updated ILLiad (OCLC is in the process of changing
their system) program have two views and do not necessarily view
the “Ship To” area on the “Borrowing Notes.” Instead, they send
the item to whomever was assigned to our code based on a previous
transaction.
If your library is
the recipient of a misdirected OCLC request item, please:
- Notify NEILSA that you
have received the item. We will need to know the ILL number, the
author and title, and the name of the library that sent the item.
- Please forward the item
on to the library that requested the item. We will tell you which
library is the recipient.
We will contact the
lending library and alert them that when they see our code, they
will need to view the “Borrowing Notes.” Thanks for your help
in solving this frustrating problem!

YALSA’s
Summer Reading List for Teens: If
you’re looking to boost your young adult book collection, the titles
above are good recommendations. And you can also find a new
summer reading list for teens from YALSA, standing for Young Adult
Library Services Association. YALSA is a division of ALA.
This newest list surrounds the theme “Discover the New
World” and the
titles harkens back to America’s
colonization period. The connection is a new movie coming
to theaters this fall called THE NEW WORLD, starring Colin Farrell
as John Smith and Q’orianka Kilcher as Pocahontas. Here’s
a sampling of YALSA’s recommended titles on this theme:
Redemption
(2004, by Julie Chibbbaro)
Pocahontas
(2003, by Joseph Bruchac)
A
Killing in Plymouth
Colony
(2003, by Carol Otis)
To
Conquer is to Live: The Life of Captain John Smith
(2001, by Kieran Doherty)
Witch-Hunt:
Mysteries of the Salen Witch Trials
(2003, by Marc Aronson)

Accredation
& Report
If your library is missing
Tier status the LSA can help you meet requirements. Call Ken
and set up a meeting at your library to see what can be done.
FROM: Gerry at SLI
Revised Tier status is on the web at: http://www.silo.lib.ia.us/for-ia-libraries/accr-and-standards/index.html
Or http://tinyurl.com/csmpy
There are 117 libraries at Tier 0 at present,
about 50 because a report has not been filed. We are still
accepting reports and changes to reports. Tier status is a
major factor in determining Direct State Aid for each public library.
Please note: the State Library is not accepting any additional
applications for accreditation, Tier 3. (applications were due 1/31/05)
Libraries that did not submit an Annual Survey
in 2004, and libraries that do not submit an Accreditation Application/Report,
do not meet Measure 6, which is a Tier 1 requirement. Those
libraries also do not meet the minimum requirements of the Direct
State Aid Letter of Agreement.
For additional information about the measures see the Accreditation
section under Library Development on the State Library website.
