New Friday Notes: notes for next week

The life so short, the craft so long to learn

HOW TO READ THIS BLOG: (& many others):

On blogs the most recent posting is the first posting and on this one the most important (in my opinion) stuff is first. So lets look at the elements.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Things you should really know about to be informed, often things you should tell your Board about so they know also.

THE LSA: Things you should know about to do your job better or to more completely server the patrons

CE: Library specific Continuing Education offered by NEILSA or SLI on the ICN or in a NE Library (usually). If you don't need ce's or if in the opinion of someone you already know everything, you can skip this section.

STUFF: Exactly that, stuff I have run across or that has been forwarded to me by others that looks interesting. We try to format these differently so it is easy to scan through - skip it if you are busy or not interested in stuff.

LINKS: Reference. A place to find things that should be Bookmarked or in Favorites but you never had time.

DUE DATES: More reference. Important dates such as Oct. 30 Annual Survey due at SLI.

The fine print stuff: exactly that skip unless you are looking for publication information.

The All Iowa Reads book for 2007 will be Splendid Solution: Jonas Salk and the Conquest of Polio by Jeffrey Kluger. This a nonfiction book, so a little different from the fiction titles we've had the first four years. Lots of info coming soon to the web site. We really hope to tie this nonfiction title into local history projects and also discussions of epidemics. Watch for more information and a date for the ICN session which is usually the end of January.

From the Eye Opener: (NWILSA) 2) State Library Offers Trustee Program: Here?s another board topic from the State Library, presented over the ICN on November 2nd: Library Governance & Funding. The agenda will cover how libraries are governed, the roles of the mayor-council-board-director, changing the library ordinance, reporting income and expenditures, amending the budget, and more.

Note this instruction from the State Library: "Each person who plans to attend needs to register in the CE catalog. http://www.statelibraryofiowa.org/cgi-bin/cecat/ It is very important to register because any ICN sites with no one registered by two weekdays prior to the event will be canceled. Most library trustees have not created a user account in the CE catalog and may need help. Library directors are asked to decide how best to handle getting trustees registered with a c.e. catalog account"

3) 2006 Iowa Tax Forms: This news just in from the Iowa Department of Revenue. If your library provides the service of distributing tax forms, then it?s time to order your library?s supply of 2006 forms. To expedite your order, the Iowa Dept. of Revenue asks that you use their website: www.idr.iowa.gov/taxforms/index.asp This site allow you to access your current account?or allows you to create an account if your library does not already have one. You may also update mailing information such as contact name, street address, email address, etc.

Libraries may begin placing orders for tax forms today actually?October 9. Use the same UserID/Password from years past to place your 2006 order. If you?ve forgotten your UserID/Password or can?t access the application, call 515-281-5370 for help. Orders must be entered online by December 1^st to ensure timely delivery to your library; the Dept. of Revenue will begin shipping in late December. All questions can be answered at the website above or by calling the number above.

Whats New blog - this is for your use and comments. Let us know what you have been up to. New programs, old programs that worked well, announcements, changes in personell, all the kinds of things that many of you share at county association meetings when you do your Round Robin sessions (some do some don't). Library support staff scholarships to attend American Library Association conference in Washington, DC in June 2007. Apply now!!!

Sage Library Support Staff Travel Grants: The Travel Grants (six to be awarded) make it possible for library support staff to attend the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference to be held in the summer of 2007 in Washington, DC. Sage Publications donates six grants of up to $1,000.

On Thursday, November 2, 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., the State Library will offer an ICN session for trustees on library governance and funding. Topics include: how libraries are governed; roles of the mayor and city council, library board, library director; changing the library ordinance; power of the library board over the library budget; reporting income and expenditures to the city; amending the budget; budget roles of the director, the board and the city. (It will cover the same material as the Library Board Orientation session at Town Meetings.)

Parents of Literacy Partners - Overview

March 19 & 26, 2007 -- Locations & Fee TBD
Parents are critical to children's readiness for reading, learning, and school. Public librarians have a key role in helping parents learn how to help their children prepare. Mary Cameron will take participants through an overview of a parent-training model that librarians can use with teachers to train parents on early literacy strategies. A more detailed training will be scheduled for those making a commitmentto participate in the project at a later date.

Grow Your Own @ your library grants
PLA is now accepting applications for its popular ?Grow Your Own @ your library? institutional scholarship. This year, PLA will award nine public libraries with grants of $8,000 each to be distributed to staff members who are working to obtain a master?s degree in library and information science. One library from each of the nine Public Library Data Service (PLDS) population categories will be selected....

Great CE delivered right to your desktop! Registration for YALSA's fall session of e-courses opened Aug. 21st. The session will run from Oct. 2-30. The courses are meant to be the equivalent of a full day workshop. The cost is $135 for YALSA members, $175 for ALA members, and $195 for non members. To register go to www.ala.org/yalsa. PLA announces new start dates for e-learning courses
E-Learning @ PLA,? the online education program of the Public Library Association, will offer five new start dates for two of its popular courses. New Planning for Results and Creating Policies for Results will each be offered five times between September 2006 and April 2007....

Most reliable search tool could be your librarian
Most people don?t bother to look at results past the first page or spend much time evaluating the source of the material, experts say. While the Web is good for offering quick results from a broad range of sources (which may or may not be trustworthy), librarians can help people get access to more authoritative information and go deeper with their research....

Let's Talk About It online archive launched
The Public Programs Office has announced the creation of a new online resource for librarians interested in Let?s Talk About It?a reading and discussion program model launched on a nationwide level for libraries in 1982. The program model involves reading a common series of books selected by a nationally known scholar, and discussing them in the context of a larger, overarching theme. The archive provides a wealth of information related to previous Let?s Talk About It national programs for libraries....

World Book releases online reference tool for kids
As students head back to the classroom this fall, World Book, Inc. is introducing World Book Kids. This new online reference tool starts with content from World Book?s Student Discovery Encyclopedia and adds activities that apply to the thousands of articles. Features include tools for educators as well as encyclopedia browsing and role-playing activities for children....

Wikipedia co-founder plans "expert" rival
Larry Sanger, a co-founder of Wikipedia and the site's former editor-in-chief, is launching a rival site called Citizendium. It will include user registration and editorial controls to govern user-submitted articles, unlike the free-for-all submission process that reigns on Wikipedia. With ?gentle? controls in place, Sanger said Citizendium will naturally weed out so-called trolls from posting obscenities or biased information....

Plug-in suggests local libraries as an alternative
Book Burro is a free download for the Firefox browser that, when a user looks at a bookstore website, gives him or her a heads-up that the book might be available cheaper somewhere else?or even available for free at a local library. Blogger Edward Vielmetti writes about Book Burro?s recent 2nd place win in OCLC?s Worldcat mashup contest....

This 1987 college video project (4:40) may be a little on the amateur side, but it?s still pretty funny. Betty Glover (right) of the Charles Trumbull Hayden Library at Arizona State University, leads her staff through a demanding workout, including such library-themed exercises as "the card catalog pull," "the book truck push," and "the phone book stack" while sweatin to such oldies as Huey Lewis and Van Halen....
