Computer Sign-In Log

  1. You must sign in to use the computer.
  2. No more than 5 people in the computer room at a time.
  3. Computer can be reserved for 1 hour. Reservations must be made at least 1 day in advance.
  4. Computer can be used for 3/4 hour when others are waiting to use it (unless it's reserved for an hour).
  5. You must put away your programs, unless the next person wants to use them.
  6. Donations for the purchase of new programs are welcome.

Computer Use Policy

Patrons must first check with library staff on duty before using the computer. Business use of the computer by library Staff or Trustees takes priority. There is no fee for the use of the computer. Patrons will be allowed computer time, whether on a reserved or a walk-in basis, in the chronological order In which requests are received.

PATRONS MUST BE IN GOOD STANDING WITH THE LIBRARY.

It is not necessary to reserve time in advance in order to use the computer. In other words, If the computer is not in use at a given time, a walk-in patron may use it.

Computer time may be reserved In advance by calling or visiting the library and placing one's name on the reserve schedule. The maximum length of computer time a person may reserve in one block is two hours. Reserve requests will not be taken more than one week in advance. If a patron fails to show up by ten minutes after the beginning of his or her scheduled reserve time, the reservation will be considered as forfeited, and others may be allowed to use the computer.

The maximum length of computer time a person may use In one block is one hour. Total computer time may not exceed 4 hours per person per week. No more than two persons using or watching the use of the computer at one time.

ACCESSORIES: Patrons may not attach accessory equipment to any of the Library's computer equipment without advance permission from the Librarian.

A charge of 20 cents a page is made for printing pages on the computer printer.

Computer Guidelines

  1. One person at a time per machine, except when accompanied by an adult.
  2. Tapes/disks will be kept at the desk and given out by the staff. Please consult the list and choose all tapes/disks to be used at the beginning of each time slot.
  3. Sign up sheets are available on a weekly basis, Wednesday through Tuesday.
  4. You may sign up for a maximum of 4 time slots per week.

YOUR COOPERATION IS APPRECIATED

Notes to staff: The following will be observed but not publicized:

  1. Encourage patrons to over-estimate how many tapes they will use so that they are not constantly coming to the desk for more.
  2. Walk-in use of the machines will not be counted toward the 4 time-slot limit. Walk-in use is on a first come-first served basis.

WHEN PATRONS DONATE COMPUTER TAPES/DISKS When patrons donate computer tapes/disks they have programmed themselves, ask if they would like their name acknowledged on the outside of the tape/disk. Also ask if they object to persons copying their tapes/disks.

Micro-Computer Policy

  1. Library patrons may use the computer when their proficiency has been demonstrated in one of the following ways:
    1. completing a library sponsored simple tutorial program designed to acquaint users with operating procedures and simple commands,
    2. has a note signed by a teacher involved in computer education at Greene Community Schools,
    3. has a certificate or enrollment slip showing completion or current enrollment in a computer class,
    4. has special library permission.
  2. Thre is no age limit for computer users; however, users unable to read must be accompanied by an adult or other qualified user.
  3. No individual instruction will be given to patrons using the computers. Persons wishing to learn must use available manuals or attend the library sponsored user's class. (The purpose of these classes is only to familiarize the patron with the mechanical use of the computer....any in depth instruction will have to come from outside sources. Our purpose is to provide the service, not to educate them in the use of computers.)
  4. Patrons may reserve time slots by stopping in to the library or phoning. Patrons may sign up for only their personal use.
  5. Reserved time is available in 1/2 hours and hour slots for adults. Elementary age children will be limited to 1/2 hour reserved times. Reserved time is limited to 1 hour per day and 3 days per week for adults and 1/2 hour per day and 3 days per week for children. You may reserve no more than one week in advance.
  6. You must enter your start time on the computer log at the desk and when you leave, enter time out and the general nature of your computer work (class, self-study, business, education) this will help us to determine what type of software is most needed.
  7. If you do not log in within 5 minutes after your scheduled time, you will lose your time if another person requests time.
  8. Anyone may use the computer during unreserved time blocks, but must relinquish it when the time block expires if someone else is waiting to use the computer.
  9. Programs must be checked out from the front desk, one at a time. They must be returned to the front desk at the end of each time block.
  10. Users are responsible for any damage or loss: if you notice something wrong, report it immediately.
  11. There will be a limit of two persons at each computer at a time. Other patrons must wait quietly in the library. The library staff reserves the right to terminate a person's use of computer if problems (such as excessive noise, physical abuse, or hardware and software malfunction) occur.
  12. Blank disks may be purchased from the library, or the patron may supply his or her own disks.
  13. The computer is intended for general education. Educational games are appropriate, but purely recreational games are not allowed. Patrons may bring their own programs into the library for use on the computer as long as the program is compatible with the computer system we have, and are in good condition and working order.
  14. No food or drink is allowed in the computer room.
  15. If a patron uses the printers, there will be a charge of five cents per sheet.
  16. Exceptions to any of these rules must be authorized by the Director of the library.





Webster City Public Library

Computer Use Guidelines

Webster City has a computer for patron use and they have set up some good guidelines that you may be interested in:

GUIDELINES FOR USE OF COMPUTER - ADULT DEPARTMENT

  1. Everyone is eligible to use the computer.
  2. Time will be reserved in half hour or one hour blocks from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. weekdays except for holidays.
  3. Reserves for time on the computer will be made for a maximum of one week In advance and only one reserve may be made per week.
  4. Unscheduled time may be claimed by anyone.
  5. Anyone five minutes late for a scheduled time forfeits that time to anyone who wishes to use the remaining time.
  6. A maximum of two persons may be at the computer at one time.
  7. Educational programs only will be used.
  8. The library will furnish some programs and manuals, but no instruction.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPUTER USE

  1. Turn extension cord switch to "on".
  2. Insert disk into disk drive and close the door.
  3. The monitor light on the front will be "on". (We never turn this switch to "Off".)
  4. Turn on the computer -- the switch is in the back.
  5. You will hear a "whirring" and the red light on the disk drive will go on. Never insert or remove the disk when the red light is on.
  6. After the red light goes out, the program is ready to use.
  7. When you are finished, remove the disk before turning off the computer; turn the computer switch off that Is in the back; turn the extension cord switch to "off".
  8. Report any problems to the circulation desk.

CAUTION

  1. Never insert or remove disk while red light is "on".
  2. Do not touch diskettes.





Carnegie-Stout Public Library, Dubuque

Policies for Public Use of Microcomputer

Costs:

Rentals: $2.00 per hour with 1 hour minimum plus 15 minute intervals after the first hour.
Floppy disks: $3.00
Paper packets: $.50 (up to 10 sheets free with each rental)

General Information:

  1. Reservations for advance dates will be taken by the Adult Services Department. Booking for the current date will be taken by the Circulation Department.
  2. Advance reservations may be made for a 1 hour or 2 hour time period.
  3. Limit of 2 advance reservations per patron per week (Sunday through Saturday). The limit is 2 advance reservations regardless of the length of each time period reserved. Reservations will be accepted for consecutive rental periods on the same day (4 hour maximum).
  4. If no one is waiting to use the microcomputer when the rental period is over the patron may continue on a quarter hour by quarter hour basis until the equipment is needed by someone else.
  5. Patrons are expected to monitor their time. Staff members will be issuing warnings. A timer may be borrowed from the circulation desk if the patron wishes to use one. Rental periods begin and end on the hour.
  6. The microcomputer may be used by only one person at a time. Games and group use is not permitted.
  7. Patrons are responsible for compliance with all copyright laws protecting the copying of software.
  8. The microcomputer may be rented only by Library cardholders. The Library card must be presented in order to checkout both the equipment and the software.
  9. A Reservation will be held for 15 minutes. If the patron has not arrived within 15 minutes then the rental period may be given to someone else. In either case the rental period will be based on the time actually used with a I hour maximum and rounded to the next highest fifteen minutes interval.





Arlington Heights Memorial Library

Guidelines for Use

Our Apple II Plus microcomputers will be available for Arlington Heights card holders, Preschool through Jr. High ages. Those under 8 years of age should be accompanied by an adult.

Patrons may use our software or do their own programming. Two patrons may use the computer at the same time if desired.

Our Computer Center will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Time may be reserved up to a week in advance either by phone or in person.

The library staff will give a short orientation to first-time users and lend assistance whenever it is needed. However, our role is one of guidance, rather than instruction.

We reserve the right to ask a patron to remove a disk which has a high noise level.

Our programs are intended for Preschool through Jr. High ages.

LOCATION AND HOURS

The Micro-Computer Corner of the Adult Services Department is located in the extreme southwest corner of the building - in the library's Adult Audio/Visual Division.

The Micro-Computer Center is open to patrons during all regular library business hours.

Welcome to the Micro-Computer Corner of the library's Adult Services Department. The materials and services available here are intended for use by patrons of high school age and older. Younger users are referred to the micro-computer facilities available in the library's Youth Services Department.

The staff of the Adult Audio/Visual Division will be happy to answer any questions regarding the library's micro-computer services.

EQUIPMENT AVAILABILITY

The Micro-Computer Corner offers two complete computer systems.

SYSTEM I includes:

  • 1 Apple II Plus unit with 48K
  • 2 disk drives
  • 1 printer
  • 1 Amdek color monitor

SYSTEM II includes:

  • 1 Apple II Plus until with 48K
  • 1 disk drive
  • 1 Amdek green screen monitor

SOFTWARE AVAILABILITY

The Adult Audio/Visual Division offers a wide array of software packages that may be used by patrons on the machines in the Micro-Computer Corner. Library software may not be checked out.

Available subjects include business and professional titles, self-instruction aids, educational simulation, and entertaining games.

Since our software collection is constantly growing, it is not practical to list here all the titles we have available.

For a complete software listing, please see the Adult Audio/Visual Librarians.

Patrons may also bring their own software disks to use on the library's micro-computers. However, the library is not responsible for any damage. Furthermore, we reserve the right to ask a patron to remove a disk which is too noisy for the library environment.

HOW TO ARRANGE TO USE THE MICRO-COMPUTER CENTER

To use the equipment in the Micro-Computer Center, a person must be of high school age or older and live in Arlington Heights or have a current Arlington Heights Memorial Library card.

While there is no charge for use of the Apple II Plus computers, we do ask that patrons make an advance reservation. To do this, please contact any of the staff In the Adult Audio/Visual Division. Our phone number is 392-0100.

Reservations are for one hour time slots. Only one reservation per day will be accepted from each patron. Reservations may not be made more than one week ahead of time. However, if the microcomputers have not been reserved ahead of time, they are available on a "first-come first-served" basis.

When you arrive to use the equipment in the Micro-Computer Center, please sign the registration sheet at the Adult A/V Service Counter. It is also necessary to leave your library card or (other valid identification) with the librarian on duty. It will be returned when you are finished with the micro-computer.

ORIENTATION

First time users will receive a brief orientation by a staff member on the proper use of the microcomputer and on the types of software that are available.

While library staff is always available for guidance and assistance, they are unable to provide in-depth Instruction. Since most programs include self-instructive procedures, there should be little difficulty.

DOING YOUR OWN PROGRAMMING

Patrons capable of doing their own computer programming are welcome to use the library's microcomputers. They may bring their own disks or may purchase blank disks at the Adult Audio/Visual Service Counter.

While library staff can offer little assistance in personal programming, we do offer the following suggestions:

  1. Read the many books on programming which are available in the library's main collection.
  2. Become acquainted with the large selection of periodicals on computers and computing -- all available at the library.
  3. Enroll in the computer programming courses available at Harper College, at Roosevelt University--Northwest Campus in Arlington Heights, or in School District 214 Adult Education Program. All offer excellent and comprehensive classes.
  4. Join one of the many computer clubs in the area.

Computer Quiz

  1. State the correct procedure for turning on the computer.
