Woodward Public Library

Selection Policy

Withdrawal and weeding will be done as deemed necessary by the librarians, following acceptable library guidelines.




Schroeder Public Library, Keystone

(Discarding Rebinding, Replacements)

Obsolescence, damage and normal wear and tear make the discarding of books a continuing process. The following factors are taken into account before a book is discarded, rebound or replaced:

  1. Physical condition of the book

  2. Number of copies remaining in the library collection

  3. Provision of adequate coverage in the field

  4. Availability of similar material in the collection

  5. Immediate need for the particular title

  6. Usefulness of a particular edition.

Every effort is made to preserve material relating to Keystone, Benton County, the immediate surrounding area and to a limited extent, Iowa.

Criteria for rebinding or replacing book with poor binding

  1. Availability of a replacement

  2. Cost of a replacement (Compared to rebinding costs)

  3. Physical condition of contents.





Winterset Public Library

Discarding

Books are withdrawn on the following basis:

  1. Unnecessary items, outdated material, books no longer of interest or in demand, worn or mutilated copies. Frequency of circulation, community Interest, and availabililty of newer and more valid materials are of prime consideration.

  2. Local history and material on local industry are an exception, and will not be discarded.

  3. Fiction, once popular but no longer in demand is discarded, as are non-fiction books which were purchased to meet demands no longer existing.

  4. Unless retained as microfilm, magazines are discarded after five years, and newspapers are retained for only three to six months.





Stockport Public Library

Policy for Surveying and Weeding the Collection

The collection of the Stockport Public Library shall be weeded on a regular basis, in order to maintain the attractiveness and currency of the collection building goals which have been or may be established.

Factors to be considered on the weeding process shall include the following:

  1. Datedness of material - based on the latest copyright and varying according to the type of material being considered.

  2. Usage - based on the latest recorded circulation data.

  3. Literary merit

  4. Accuracy of material

  5. Needs and interests of the community

  6. Physical consideration

The library staff shall retain the right to dispose of weeded material in any way which may be deemed proper and feasible.




Avoca Public Library

Book Weeding Policy

Book weeding is an important aspect of collection development. When library books lose the value for which they were originally selected, they should be weeded so that the collection remains vital and useful. The weeding of books is based on the following guidelines:

  1. To remove physically worn or damaged volumes from the library.

  2. To eliminate books containing obsolete information.

  3. To remove duplicate copies of titles which have waned in popularity, eliminating those most physically damaged or worn.

  4. To consider for withdrawal, fiction which has not been checked out for several years.
