NOTES

The Friday Notes has gone to archive & will be no more.

NOTES is the replacement, unlike the Friday Notes, NOTES is occasional,
when there is something to say it will be posted. As such you will not
find in NOTES such things as: anything posted to IowaLib or other
commonly read lists, "Stuff", CE reminders, or material posted on the
State Library of Iowa website or
other commonly used web sites e.g. Web Junction Iowa or NEILSA

You will find links to things of importance, you will find short
postings of things of immediate local library interest which will
include "Telling the Library Story" materials from your libraries.
When we know of them we will post job listings and changes from the
libraries and county meeting dates. But no more begging for
information.

Under seperate cover you will receive a monthly listing of
statewide ce listings produced by the LSA's. Finally you will get advanced
notice of potential
ce events produced by NEILSA, if you are desirous of something
happening it would be best if you used the comments at the bottom to
give me feedback.

Finally on feedback, please use the comments section so everyone may
see your thoughts, suggestions et. al. NOTES will shrink or expand
based on your requests. Friday Notes took up nearly 8 hours a week, I feel
that my time is better spent on your concerns so it had to go.

To the few of you who read it every week and even commented, Thank You.

Now to NOTES...
Consortia new information will start to be posted over the next two weeks.

NOTES: On mold & flooding.

Information about flood recovery:
The ONLY way to permanently protect your collections from mold is to
control the environment by keeping the temperature within 65°-70° Fahrenheit and
the relative humidity within 45%-65%. Prevention is the key but if you do
experience a mold outbreak there are non-chemical means for clean-up and
recovery. Some chemicals kill mold, but the only safe and effective way to keep
it from coming back is to modify the environment which contributed to the
development of mold. Some of the chemicals used in the past by libraries to
kill mold are no longer recommended, because many are harmful to both people and
collections.

For patron comfort, temperatures of 70° Fahrenheit plus
or minus 2° are acceptable in libraries, provided relative humidity is kept at
50%. In conjunction with humidity and temperature control, adequate air
circulation will help prevent mold growth. Air circulation helps control
moisture levels through evaporation."
Abstract: Iowa's Library
Service Areas provide first call for help (800/772-2023), consulting,
continuing education, interlibrary loan and reference services to libraries
throughout the state. There are seven Library Service Areas, each serving a
part of Iowa; each Area is
governed by a seven-member Board of Trustees, similar to your own library board.

The purpose of this note is
to welcome you to the world of being a library director & to remind
experienced directors of NEILSA services.

Simply; what the NEILSA
does is answer your questions, provide backup to your services and give you a
safe & friendly person to talk to about the questions & problems that
you run into as a director.

NEILSA staff will help you
develop policies to present to your board, face the everyday problems of
dealing with the public, as well as provide a safe confidential place to
discuss problems with trustees, staff, the city, vendors, and technology.

We seriously want you to
contact us, so we have FREE voice phone at 800/772-2023, free fax at
877/396-8359, e-mail and a website all at no charge to you so
you may contact us with your problems, concerns, and needs.

NorthEast
Iowa Library Service Area (NEILSA)

The
NorthEast Iowa Library Service Area provides supporting services to libraries
and encourages financial support for library services. For example, assistance with the
telecommunications discount program known as e-rate, among many other things. NEILSA serves the specific geographic area of
13 counties in northeast Iowa
and is governed by a seven member board. The board is made up of representatives
of the following: area public library trustees, public library employees, area education
agency, community colleges and the public at large.

NEILSA provides the four mandated
services listed below:

Consultation:
LSA staff provides consulting services to local library staff, trustees, and
local government officials. We are also available to work with local
libraries on any subject as the need arises. Examples include technology,
budgeting, planning, collection evaluation, reference services, and programming
for all ages. NEILSA staff also provides information about State Library
programs and services including Enrich Iowa
(direct state aid, Open Access and Access Plus) accreditation, certification,
SILO, etc.

Continuing
Education: The Library Service Areas offer continuing
education programs which meet the needs of library staff and trustees in their
geographic area. The NEILSA offers workshops that can be applied by local
library staff towards recertification of their public librarian’s certificate.

Information
Services: Reference questions from the public that cannot be
answered by the local library may be sent to the back-up reference service
provided by the NEILSA.

Interlibrary
Loan: NEILSA staff train local library staff so they can
borrow and lend materials for their customers through SILO Interlibrary Loan. NEILSA
process interlibrary loans when a library does not have access to SILO or when
the material must be obtained from out of state.

Rob Darrow writes: “Blue Skunk Johnson did a great job of challenging
all of us at the ALA Second Life session on the librarian’s role in copyright.
The text of his talk is here.
While enjoying the wonderful surroundings of the ALA Island, Blue talked about
many things related to copyright and issued a variety of suggestions. The one
that resonated most with me was: Teach the things you can do with
copyright and when in doubt, err on the side of the user.” For other ALA
National Library Week activities in Second Life, watch this Machinima

There’s
a ton of information in your computer’s user manual, but it’s also hundreds of
pages long. To become a real power user, you could read through the entire
thing, memorizing the details on each page. Or you could turn to this tip sheet
from PC Magazine, carefully
organized into nearly three dozen categories and filled with advice, how-tos,
hacks, and add-ons. For example, did you know this Word 2007 tip? When
reopening a large document, hit Shift-F5 to jump directly to the last spot you
were working on....

Did you know that when the economy goes down library use goes up?

In hard times, libraries are more important than ever. Human beings need
what books give them better than any other medium. Since ancient nights around
prehistoric campfires, we have needed myth. And heroes. And moral tales. And
information about the world beyond the nearest mountains or oceans.

Today, with books and movies more expensive than ever, and television
entertainment in free fall to the lowest level of stupidity, free circulating
books are an absolute necessity. They are quite simply another kind of food.

For those without money, the road to the treasure house of the imagination
begins at the public library. Columnist Pete Hamill, New
York Daily News
