Notes for May 28th

Hi All,

Hope you’ve got something planned for the upcoming holiday weekend.  It looks like it will be a beautiful start to summer.  We’ll be closed on Monday.  I’m hoping for some perfect golfing weather myself.  And something good on the grill.  :-)

I’m attaching the CE Roundup for the summer.  There will be an update later on when more dates are settled.  In the mean time, there are many things available online so you can learn and still be available for summer reading.

Eunice

Time to spring into action and join NEIBORS in this open enrollment window.  Three years old and growing, NEIBORS is a consortium providing affordable access to downloadable audiobooks and ebooks.  The consortium is managed by East Central, North Central and Northeast LSAs; the vendor is OverDrive.  In three years, NEIBORS has grown to over 100 participating libraries and the collection has grown to over 2,000 titles.  The over 53,000 checkouts show that it’s been very popular.

If you’re interested, there is a $500 (one time) start up fee and an annual subscription that we will work out.  Signed agreements need to be at the NEILSA office by June 25th for this period.  Training will be held in July and those libraries will be able to start using the service in August.  Contact us if you have any questions.

Dear Librarians,

Hope you are having a good week and getting ready for the beginning of summer; Memorial Day Weekend!

With May coming to a close so is the opportunity to participate in the group purchase through the state. As a gentle reminder you have the following databases are included:

We had great success last year and want to make sure that any library that wishes to be included this year gets the chance to do so. In order to participate you must contact Jay Peterson at the state library by June 1st. The more libraries that choose to be included in the group the better the pricing!

Please let me know if you have any questions and many thanks for the consideration!

Senior Spaces Wiki

The "senior spaces" wiki contains content since 2007 on "senior spaces" beginning with the first "space" which opened at the Old Bridge (NJ) Public Library.  If your library is thinking of developing a "space" this wiki is a great resource to use as part of your planning, design and implimentation process.  If you have completed a "space" in your library geared for the generations of older adults let us know.  We welcome additional content to the wiki.  Contact me at:  kleiman@aol.com for more information and details.

Sign Up for Enrich Iowa

June 25 is the deadline for libraries to sign up for all three parts of Enrich Iowa.

Open Access reimburses libraries for checking out materials to people outside their own city or county.  ILL Reimbursement subsidizes the cost of lending books through SILO.  And Direct State Aid rewards libraries for meeting service standards.  All 3 program comprising Enrich Iowa are administered by the State Library.

This year, the State Library is not mailing paper copies of the sign-up form or the terms of agreement.  You can find it all on this webpage http://www.statelibraryofiowa.org/ld/enrich-ia.  The sign-up is a simple 1-page form asking for library contact information, a check mark in any or all of the boxes indicating which programs your library will participate in, and a signature (library director’s signature is fine here).  Return the completed signed ENRICH IOWA Letter of Agreement by mail to the State Library by June 25. You may also fax the Agreement to 515-281-6191 or email it to Toni Blair at toni.blair@lib.state.ia.us

Iowa library advocate wins White House Conference on Library and Information Services Taskforce Award

For Immediate Release
May 6, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American Library Association (ALA) today announces that Greer Fry of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is the winner of the 2010 White House Conference on Library and Information Services Taskforce (WHCLIST) Award.

The award, given to a non-librarian advocate participating in a federal library advocacy event for the first time, is a $300 stipend granted to a recipient toward the expense of attending Library Advocacy Day. This year the ALA will host a Library Advocacy Day rally June 29 on the U.S. Capitol grounds in Washington, D.C., during the ALA Annual Conference. The day replaces the spring National Library Legislative Day.

Library Advocacy Day is a chance for library supporters to join together to demonstrate support for libraries and for first-time advocates to get involved. After the rally, which is free and open to the public, ALA members will meet with their members of Congress and their staffs to talk about the needs and concerns of libraries in their communities.
As a lifelong library user and library advocate for more than 30 years, Greer has served as a member of the Iowa Library Association (ILA) and as president of the Iowa Library Friends Association, an ILA subdivision. In her application letter, Greer explained how the flood of 2008 in Cedar Rapids and the loss of the city’s main library greatly enhanced her passion for advocacy.
Emily Sheketoff, Executive Director of the ALA Washington Office, said advocates like Greer, with strong stories to tell about the role of libraries, are their community’s most effective tool for supporting their libraries.

“As someone who has been actively involved in rebuilding the library system in her own community, Greer knows the importance of libraries to the public during times of crisis – be it a natural disaster or the current U.S. financial crisis,” Sheketoff said.

“Getting through to members of Congress at a time when there are so many needs and issues competing for their attention is immensely challenging. The ALA is pleased that Greer will joining the hundreds of other library supporters on a day dedicated to advocating for the needs of libraries and the public they serve.”
