If you're interested in joined NEIBORS this round, be sure to get me your signed agreement by Friday (June 25, 2010).  I need to turn everything over to the techs at OverDrive soon.

And for all members, OverDrive is planning Training Month again in September.  Watch for announcements for free refresher classes as well as contests and prizes!

Iowa Small Libraries Association

I'd also like to pass along this reminder from Linda Adams:

We will be electing new ISLA officers this fall.  We need someone for each of these offices: Vice President/President elect, Secretary and Treasurer.  I would really like at least two people to run for each office.  If you are willing please email me at fayettelib@netins.net.  Or one of the other committee members: Kathy Carlson wellmanLib@gmail.com  or Susan Blythe at conradpl@netins.net

NEILSA Professional Collection

We’ve begun adding the materials available for loan from our professional collection to LibraryThing.  You’ll see book covers and search boxes on neilsa.org.  If there’s something there you’d like to check out, just call or email Denise (luppen@neilsa.org)

Enrich Iowa

Libraries intending to participate in Enrich Iowa need to return the program’s Letter of Agreement by this Friday June 25.  Enrich Iowa includes 3 distinct programs: Open Access, ILL Reimbursement, and Direct State Aid.  We strongly encourage every public library to participate in all 3 programs.  And doing so is super simple:

¨ Find the Enrich Iowa agreement on the State Library’s website here http://www.statelibraryofiowa.org/ld/enrich-ia

¨ Check off all 3 programs and return the signed agreement to the State Library by mail or fax (515-281-6191) or by email to Toni Blair at toni.blair@lib.state.ia.us

This year, the State Library is not mailing copies of the agreement.  You’ll find the paperwork, instructions—and eventually a list of all participating libraries—on the webpage above. Call with questions and sign up for Enrich Iowa FY2011 today!

BCR

We’ve heard from several of you with questions about the State Library’s message a few days ago regarding the phase out of BCR, and what effect that will have on you.  Let me try to explain what is happening.  If you did not receive a message about BCR, you can delete this message.

The Bibliographic Center for Research (BCR) is a regional agency that, up until now, has brokered pricing for databases, including OCLC World Cat and First Search.  It is located in Aurora, Colorado, and Iowa was one of its member states.  There are several regional agencies located across the United States that also broker database pricing, such as WILS – Wisconsin Library Services, Minitex, located in Minnesota, and Lyrasis, which is a combination of three former BCR-like agencies—PALINET, SOLINET, and NELINET—which were all located along the eastern U.S. coast.  BCR is phasing out operations and has initiated a partnership with the Lyrasis network.

Each of your libraries has had a deposit account with BCR that was set up many years ago, to cover any cost you would incur to search the databases that were not covered in the agreement BCR had with the State Library.  You would get a statement each year from BCR telling you the amount of the deposit you had on account.  I’m not sure what will happen to those accounts, or how that money might be refunded to you.  We’ll have to clarify that with the State Library.

The First Search databases like Article First, or Contents First, have been available to you to do unlimited searches for many years.  The most familiar database is WorldCat, and some of you have searched it to find cataloging information for your automation systems.

If you are interested in continuing your subscription to any of the First Search databases you should send back the First Search Agreement to the State Library before July 15, 2010.  I believe the State Library will pay for access through Lyrasis through June 30, 2011, but for FY2012, your library will be billed by the State Library for a portion of the cost for that subscription, similar to the EBSCO subscription arrangement.

Please contact Jay Peterson at the State Library if you have questions about this process.  The toll-free number for the State Library is 800-248-4483.

BCR – addendum

Deposit Account Release Process Announced

As BCR begins to wind down its operations, any remaining deposit accounts will be released. BCR will start releasing deposits beginning August 1 and expects to complete this process for all accounts by August 31. Please complete the online form by July 16.

Survey for Library Services Reorganization Committee

You’ve probably received this message multiple times already, but we want to make sure everyone participates.  This is your chance to make sure the Committee knows what your priorities are.

The Library Services Reorganization Committee working on the legislative mandate to reorganize the delivery of library services wishes to survey the ILA membership and the Iowa Library Community to gather information for the second meeting on July 7.  The information from the survey will assist committee members as they begin crafting a new service delivery model to libraries.

Although you may receive this message several times, we are asking each person to respond to the survey only once.   Different people from the same library are welcome to participate.  You will be able to respond to the survey from now through Thursday, July 1, 11:59 p.m.  On Friday at 12:00 a.m. the survey will close and committee members will begin analyzing the results on July 2.

The survey will take 10 to 15 minutes to complete.  The link to the survey is: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/H7TDY3Q

Thank you from the members of the Library Services Reorganization Committee:  Dale Vande Haar, Nathan Clark, Sandy Long, Nancy Trask, Lorraine Borowski, Susan Kling, LaWanda Roudebush, Bonnie McKewon, Ann Coulter, Mary Wegner, and Monica Gohlinghorst.
